The end of my blog

I am very proud to say that my blog has come to its end. It has been a great experience and I have learnt a lot. I have enjoyed all of it especially the filming. It has been a very long process and it required a lot hard work and effort. I hope you enjoy it
This is my final thriller opening
Guess who?

Evaluation Activity 7-Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

We had to do a preliminary task for our coursework, we were told that it we not awarded any extra marks for this but it was compulsory and it must be completed by two weeks. The preliminary task had to consist of three different camera shots
•    180 Degree Rule
•    Match on action
•    Shot/Reverse Shot
The preliminary task had to also include a door opening, this influenced us and we also included this idea in our thriller opening. I think that this is our biggest evidence on how it helped us, to not only use what we learnt but continue and progress in a vast way.
This task had many positives and allowed us to learn the basics, it was a Great introduction. It also gave us an impression as to what is required to have a successful film.
At the same time as learning and using these camera shots we also included other camera shots that we felt would help us for instance close ups and panning. I think this positive approach that we all had helped us a lot and it also boosted our relationship as a group. I also believe that because we did the preliminary task in the same group, it built a level of stability and we all became familiar with each other’s strengths. We also became a lot more comfortable with each others presence and I think that all of us were able to add more input rather than anyone being shy or embarrassed to add input. This helped our communication a lot.
The biggest strong point of the task was definitely in the technology side. We learnt how to use new software’s such as Final cut express. This was very significant and it helped us a lot in our thriller opening. At first I was not as confident but I think this task helped my confidence and abilities in using Final cut express.
I also became a lot better at using Camera’s, we were given a tutorial on how to use it and using our knowledge of different camera shots and angles inspired me to film our thriller opening. Our preliminary task did not go as great as I first predicted, this was actually a good thing and it made all of us aware of what we needed to do to improve. We all became more focused on learning from our mistakes.
The reason why our preliminary task did not go as expected and it was not a success is because we did not spend enough attention on planning or editing. I think overall it was rushed and our main priority was using the three camera shots.
We also learnt about sound and lighting. For instance not filming opposite the sun and having the microphone as near as possible. I think these vital factors helped us a lot in our thriller opening
Another big improvment we had was the location, our location for the preliminary task was not good enough and at the time it was our only option. However for our thriller opening we chose much better locations and it is clearly shown.
Overall I must admit that I was unaware at first of how much the preliminary task would help us. I think it was a great task and the pressure of not being graded was incredible and it got more out of us. I believe it helped us a lot and it definitely impacted our thriller opening.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
1. Canon fs200 - We used this camera for some of our filming because we found that it was easier to use then the Sony HD A1, and that it was easier for us to carry around as the tripod that it uses is a lot smaller then the tripod for the Sony HD A1.
Pros - Lightweight, Easy to carry around, easy to use.
Cons - Cannot record in HD, cannot get high angle views due to small tripod, quality is not great, would rather use Sony HD A1.

2. Adobe After Effects - Our group used After effects to create our thriller titles. At first we found this program quite hard to use at first, but after a 60 minute lesson it became a lot easier to use, and it has a wide variety of items to make numerous titles.
Pros - Can create very good titles, Large variety of effects and fonts.
Cons - Very hard to get used to without a training session.

3. Final Cut Express - We used this to create our thriller opening. This program is highly effective at creating films, because it can cut down to every frame, and allows for very accurate cuts into the video. It also has many useful effects that we used in our thriller opening, such as viewfinder and text, which we used to help create our CCTV camera effect.
Pros - Cut to frames, many effects, easy to get used to.
Cons - Hard to use at first, may get confused with the number of effects.

4. Sony HD A1 - We used this camera for the majority of our filming as it allowed us to film in very high quality, it recorded the film in HD, and the tripod that comes with it allowed use to record some high angle views. Initially we decided to film using only the Sony HD A1, as it recorded footage in HD and would provide us with the best quality end product. However, we soon learned that it was quite hard to work with, not to mention the weight, and the effort it take to carry it around with the tripod. It did have its strengths though, such as the high tripod allowing us to record higher angles.
Pros - Tall tripod, Records high quality, Records in HD
Cons - Has many settings, hard to get used to.

5. Adobe Media Encoder - We used the media encoder so that we could transfer our video into a smaller mp4. file size so that it became a lot easier to upload onto youtube, in which people could watch it and give us feedback.
Pros - Can greatly decrease file size
Cons - Video quality decreased, need to know what you are going to transfer video to.

6. Adobe Photoshop -Photoshop was used to edit newspaper titles and add pictures to it so that it is our own. Photoshop also converted the PSD file into JPEG so that it was compatible with Final Cut Express. Other equipment used was a Desk Lamp for indoor lighting, and we used Garage Band to create our music. Garage Band was a very useful tool, and was very easy for me to get into and learn. It provided many sounds and it has a very user friendly, allowing me to create what I wanted to. There were multiple layers I could put each sound on, and many things could be altered and played around with. These include tempo, volume of each layer, and whether each layer play in the left speaker or right speaker.
Pros - Useful for editing, large number of options to edit, professional quality products
Cons - Very hard to use if you are not used to photoshop.

Evaluation Activity 5-How did you attract/address your audience?

I am personally very business minded so this is where I had most my impact naturally. Whilst creating our thriller opening we wanted to create something different to what other thrillers that are releasing today. What we did not want is for our thriller to be too similar to what was out in the cinemas. This is when I came up with the idea of making the story of our thriller realistic and I wanted to be something everyone was aware of. I wanted this to be our unique selling point, as I thought it could be very beneficial overall. I think that this unique selling point will attract a lot our target audience. So I started to carry out my research, what I did was research real cases and newspapers. I also worked with my group doing primary research such as questionnaires.
After carrying out this research it was very easy to find what the best target audience should be. So we chose Young females because we knew that we wanted the victims to be young females, which meets the needs of our target audience which are excitement and thrills.
We will attract our audience through Facebook, youtube, ustream and we have also created a poster using glogster.

Evaluation question 4

Why would the target audience watch the film?
This was my biggest priority, throughout the task, I personally carried out allot of research for example questionnaires. We carried out three different questionnaires:
·         Specific questionnaire
·         General questionnaire
·         One on One questionnaire
After conducting this primary research it was clear what our target audience should be. Since then everything we have done has been to the interest of our target audience. Finding out the right target audience is crucial and it is clear we could not create a film for all ages as the film has an age restrictions.
We wanted to fulfil the needs of our target audience, in order to this we looked at many methods such as Maslow’s Hierarchy. Our target wanted to see fear and suffering but at the same time they wanted it to be realistic and something which could happen to anyone. This refers to the Maslow’s Hierarchy Psychological needs.

·         Aged between 18-25
·         Male or female (however I did aim the film more towards females as the victim was female, which builds up excitement)
·         Working or studying
·         Enjoy thriller/horror films
·         Live by themselves, with friends or partner
·          Independent
·         Want to have fun and enjoy them selves

Evaluation question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

The aim of a production company is to create and sell a film to their target audience who ever they may be. They do this through a number of ways such as advertising, this could be in the form of posters, TV advertisements and signs on billboards. Also seeing as we have made a British film we may be able to get some funds from the film company Working Title Films, because they focus on the selling and the production of British Films, such as Bridget Jones' Diary and Dead Mans Shoes (which may not be  incorporated with Working Title Films).

In my opinion the film would be similar to the film S3ven (Seven). I say this because of the type of things we include into the film. For example our main idea for the film would be a detective looking for a murderer, the murderer being seen in the opening above. This idea is similar to the film Seven in which the detective is looking for someone who has murdered people based on the seven deadly sins, but our film uses the basic idea of murder, in which there may not be a reason, (this reason being religious in Seven).

When adding the titles to the thriller opening I did not think much about where any of the titles would go. The only ones that I really thought about was the starring title, and the directed by title, because they are usually the most important in films. The others I believed would fit in well anywhere so I decided to put them in any order.

Looking at the video there are some aspects to it that are very common to other films of the thriller genre. For example some of the locations, where the lighting is very low key and some of the clips are slightly high key, which gives it that thriller feel. Another key feature in our opening is the title for the name of the film. This one thing makes our film unique to other thriller openings because the use of rain effects is not very common in thriller films.
Another key feature is our thriller opening is the use of newspapers. We thought about using this because we believed that it would give the opening a very local feel, and make the audience feel as if the killer is well known and not just a random killer going around. The way that the words are also blacked out gives it a mysterious feel, and makes the audience want to know what is being covered up.

For the final part of our opening, in which the door begins to open and the screen fades out just before the door is fully open gives it that mysterious aspect because you do not know if the person being killed is a child, man or woman. From films I've seen, this is only slightly used during the film and sometimes during the opening of the film.

A production company's aim is to develop and distribute a film to an audience. They use many different advertising methods to put their film across to the public. This includes TV advertising, posters, billboards, magazines, newspapers and through many other forms of media. Plus, merchandise is also a good form of advertising.

Since we've filmed a British film, we believe that Working Title would probably be the most suitable production for our film, and that they would be able to provide us with the funds for this film. They have produced hits such as Bridget Jones Diary and hot Fuzz. However, because I'm looking for the film to be of a bigger budget, we may have to bring in another production company such as Fox Searchlight, who specialise in British films.

Since its a big budget film, we will need a big cinema chain to distribute it, such as ODEON or Vue. Therefore our film will more likely to reach a larger audience, and we will be able to make back some profit. We realise that releasing our film in big cinemas will be very risky, as the film may fail due to being brand new, and not in a well known franchise or something. However, it is a risk we are going to take, as we believe that our storyline is very gripping, and special effects attractive.

Our thriller will provide many opportunities for merchandise, particularly clothing items such as t-shirts and bags. The dark, chilling visual style of the film will fit perfectly for clothing. It is also worth noting that the plot will allow for future sequels if the film is financially successful. If we were to create a sequel to Guess Who?, we may not necessarily bring back the same main antagonist or protagonist. We could change the antagonist and also the area. This will allow us to promote a new and improved idea but with the same premise, but only if demand is there. However, if the audience responds very positively to the characters, we may have them make a come back.

We will also use Facebook as a way to draw in viewers, I think this is a great way of promotion and by created Facebook groups and posting trailers of our film it could grab a lot of attention. We will use youtube and ustream in similar ways.
I felt that it will be great for us to create our own poster and since we wanted our film to be a major film it is only right. I created the poster using a Glogster, it was easy to use and very effective.

Evaluation activity 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our thriller opening is targeted at a number of social groups for instance teenagers, males and females in their 20’s but females preferably. The reason why we have chosen young females is because the reason we have chosen the story is because it is realistic and possible. The number of crimes on females is increasing. They will be more interested in it as they seek excitement and thrill.
We have made our character similar and we was influenced by the film Seven and Junior Keller from the unseen.
I think that our film represents the chosen social groups and it does attract them. I think the reason why we were able to do this is because of the level of our primary and secondary research. Once we had chosen and identified what was required we made it our main concern to make our film something our target market could relate to and also to fulfil their needs.
Our location is South Norwood near a train station. This is key factor when analysing the story and its representation of particular social groups. A lot of university students have to take the train and have to walk home or live near a similar location.

Evaluation question 1

In wgat way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Media representation is very important when creating films. The media portray a selective amount of opinions to the world. Thse opinions are vital and are usually taken in buy the general public. Represents allot of different opinions and usually has different reasons and people that it is aimed at. We had to take all of these factors in account in order for our film to be successful, at the same time we wanted to make our film co-exist with the stereo types. The stereo types we used were the male dominance over females.

Our thriller does relate to the conventions of a thriller, how every it is different from the usual thriller as it is based on reality. The opeining of our thriller creates suspence and it is about murder, which comes under the sub genre crime thriller. Crime thriller is about murder, rape or something along that line. Our thriller is about a cerial killer, we do not reveal whether there is any sexual purpose but we leave that for the viewer to decide. We build this question by making the victim showed in the film to be female.
We used the CCTV effect to show that there is something watching you, this can be intrepretated many ways.

Frame 1
This image is pins on a photo of someones eye, this is very strange and it creepy. It also builds up suspenCe because we as a viewer have no idea as to what it is about and why it is there. This relates to the conventions of a thriller.
Frame 2
This is an image of pictures of children on a wall. We have some idea that this picture is of past victims or of people who may be future victims. We have no idea why this person has chosen children and what he gains. This relates to the conventions of a thriller
Frame 3
Is an image of a book , we do not have a clear indication as to what is in the book and what importance they have. I think that the director is trying to show us a little bit, he does this to make the viewer think about what it might be. It relates to the thriller conventions because it is all related to suspence.
Frame 4
This is taken from the film seven, it is taken in a photo booth, I think that this has many representations such as the colour red. The colour red represents love and danger. I think this is a clear indication for what the director wants us to think about.
Frame 5
Is an image of papers, we do not have a clear indication as to what is on the papers and what importance they have. I think that the director is trying to show us a little bit, he does this to make the viewer think about what it might be. It relates to the thriller conventions because it is all related to suspence.
Frame 6
This is a very intresting image, it is off a man trying to put a thread through a needle, we also see blood on the man hands and a sought of bandage on his hands. I think it is clear what the director is showing, he his trying to tell us that it is very tense and edgy. We get this from the needle and the thread. We also see blood and bandages, this I think shows pain and danger. All of these relate to the conventions of a thriller
Frame 7
It is an image of an outline of hands
Frame 7

These are a few Frames from our film

Frame 1
This is an image of a Our main character who is playing the role of a villain, we have used the effect of CCTV. We chose this because it shows that something is watching. This relates to the conventions of thrillers because it builds up suspence, we are not clear wheather he is a victim or villain.
Frame 2
This is an image of Jordan walking up the stairs, this is right after the cctv effect. We are  trying to continue  the ‘somethings watching you effect’.
Frame 3
Frame 3 is a example of our titles, we have chosen the black background because we wanted to bring a dark effect. This is related to the conventioms of a thriller and we also used a red font to represent danger.
Frame 4
This is an image of Jordan marking his next location, it reflects the conventions of a thriller at the same time it shows the audience what is the next step.
Frame 5
This is an image of a newspaper, we wanted to bring the sense of reality thorugh out the film opening and this was our chance.

My film Poster

Creating a poster on Glogster

I felt that it will be great for us to create our own poster and since we wanted our film to be a major film it is only right. I created the poster using a Glogster, it was easy to use and very effective.
